Elaine Hawes was born November 29, 1956, in Henderson, Kentucky to the late Eugene and Thelma Powell Hawes. She departed this life on October 18, 2026, at Deaconess Lucy King St. Anthony’s Hospice here in Henderson, Kentucky.
She graduated from Henderson City High School Class of “75” where she was a member in various clubs and activities. She accepted Christ at an early age and has been a dedicated lifelong member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. During her membership she was a member of the Missionary Society, served in the choir from childhood to adulthood, was an active member of the Baptist Training Union (B.T.U.) and a cheerleader for Reverend Whitlock until her sickness prevented her from doing so.
She resided at the Redbank’s Nursing Facility and during her residency there, the church choir would visit and sing during Redbank’s Church Hour. Elaine would chime right in and assist the choir with the selections; waving her hands as she would always do when blessed by the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Elaine was always “the life of the party”. When she entered a room, she was noticed and would tell you, “Like it is”. One of her favorite phrases was “I’m keeping it real”. She loved music and Gospel was her favorite, but she was not shy around some Old School music because it reminded her of her Old School Days. She loved all of her nieces and nephews and affectionately called them “her babies”.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Tommy Powell; niece, Rochele Tapp; grandparents, Rev. Elma and Bertha Calhoun Hawes and Henry and Julia Jackson Powell.
She leaves to cherish her memories her sisters, Theda Owens and Bertha Hairlson of Henderson; brother, Eugene Hawes, Jr.; her life long best friend Gloria Jean Pruitt who was more like a sister; aunts ,Susie Annie Davie, Indianapolis, Anna Helena West, Evansville, and Katie Mae (Laffoon Chip) Williams, Henderson; uncle, Elmer Lee (Cherlyn) Hawes, Bowling Green; nephew, Rev. Lynn Owens Madisonville; sister of family and auntie to nieces and nephews; Mrs. Alicia Garret; nieces Aletha Harris of Evansville and Amber Posey, Henderson; “her girls” Mikesha Hairlson and Brittany Hairlson of Henderson, KY; and a host of other nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins, and other family members. She also leaves to cherish her memory Myrtle Carter and her daughter, Carrington Mason Stone who remained a special part of this extended family.
